Garbage Pail Hoops Multiplication Game

What makes this game fun is that it’s sport related. A miniature indoor version of basketball played with a garbage pail. The players must identify and/or solve multiplication problems, crumble up the paper, shoot and make the basket. The player with the most crumbled up paper problems in the garbage pail wins!

Materials:

  • 2 pads of note pad sized paper
  • 1 or 2 garbage pails
  • Masking tape
  • Pen, marker and larger paper for score keeping
  • Scissor
  • Timer
  • Answer key
  • 1 or 2 Chairs
  • Calculator (optional)

Make a list of what your child could do to help in creating the game. Help your child brainstorm more ideas and details to make the game even better. Remember, the more your child is invested in making the game, the more she/he will be motivated to play and learn.

Step 1 – Get together your supplies, use masking tape to mark the court or simply mark where players have to shoot the crumbled paper to get 2 points and a further distance for a 3 points shoot. Make a simple score board with large paper or use some kind of wipe-off surface/board to keep score. Place the garbage pail(s) on a chair(s). You will need a clock or some kind of timer.

Step 2 – Use or make a pad of pad sized paper for the paper balls. Each sheet of paper will have a multiplication problem. Have the player create their own problems on the paper for the game. You may need a calculator to help with making the game problems. Give each player a pad of problems. Begin with at least 20 problems per pad.  Next make an answer key for the game if necessary. It will depend on the types of problems.

Step 3 – Write the rules down on a sheet of paper so everyone has a clear idea how to play the game. This will also teach your child the importance of following instructions since it’s the basis for mastery and learning. All games/toys are to be played with a parent and must be supervised.

Step 5 – To begin, each players will have a pad of problems. Make sure the players have a pencil and pad if they need it. Remember each player must pick up a paper with a multiplication problem, solve it correctly, crumble up the paper and shoot either from the 2 point or 3 point spot. If the player answers incorrectly the player must return the paper to the bottom of the pad of problems, and take the next problem. Ready? Set the timer for 10 minutes and go!

  • The player will pick up the problem paper, solve it, crumble it and shoot from either the 2 point or 3 point line.
  • However, if answered incorrectly the player puts the problem to the bottom of pad and draws the next problem.
  • During the game there will be a need for a score keeper to mark 2 points or 3 points for each shoot.
  • If either player finishes the pad of problems first, or the time is up the game is over, check the score board to see who wins!
  • To make this a non-competitive game. Players must all the problems correctly before the time is up to win!

Take it Further

Be creative! If you have the room make a room look like a basketball court. Make a fancy scoreboard maybe even come up with uniforms.

For young children, just starting out with multiplication they can simply read the problem cards with the answer. This is a stress free to slowly memorize the multiplication table. For elementary kids, they can use the calculators to help with problems they get stuck on. This is also a great way to learn how to use a calculator. For older students, it can be a combination of word problems, charts, and pre-algebra problems that require multiplication. You easily increase the challenge by adding more problem and changing the amount of time.
